PhenX Overview

  • The PhenX (consensus measures for Phenotypes and eXposures) Toolkit (https://www.phenxtoolkit.org) is a web-based catalog of recommended measurement protocols of phenotypes and exposures suitable for inclusion in genomic, clinical, and translational research studies with human participants.
  • The PhenX Toolkit supports consistent data collection by providing detailed protocols for collecting new data via different modes of administration. Current PhenX Data Collection Modes can be found here, https://www.phenxtoolkit.org/search.
  • For each protocol, the Toolkit provides detailed instructions (e.g., required training and equipment); features (e.g., Spanish language versions); and bioinformatics support (e.g., data dictionaries, REDCap compatible modules) which facilitate implementation of the protocols.
  • Studies that use PhenX protocols benefit from the ability to perform cross-study analyses to increase statistical power and to replicate results.
  • The use of PhenX protocols facilitates collaboration and data sharing, thus increasing the impact of individual studies over time.
