Description
The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) is a 41-item, self- or parent-report questionnaire designed to screen for childhood anxiety disorders, including general anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, and symptoms related to school phobias in children ages 8 to 17. Each item is rated on a 3-point Likert-scale (0 = Not True or Hardly Ever True; 1 = Somewhat True or Sometimes True; 2 = Very True or Often True).
Specific Instructions
If the participant is under 12 years of age, both versions must be collected (parent and self-reported versions). If the participant is over 12 years of age, both versions should be collected whenever possible.
For children ages 8-11, it is recommended that the clinician explain all questions or have the child answer the questionnaire sitting with an adult in case there are any questions.

Anxiety Disorders Symptoms

Definition
A questionnaire to assess anxiety disorders, which include a number of different conditions such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (APA, 2000).
Purpose
This measure is used to screen an individual for the presence of anxiety disorders and to assess the severity of underlying symptoms. Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions occurring in about 18 percent of the population (Kessler et al., 2005). Anxiety disorders may be influenced by genetics and environmental factors and commonly occur with other physical conditions, such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal disease, as well as with other mental illnesses such as depression and substance abuse disorders (APA, 2000). Furthermore, a significant proportion of pediatric psychiatric patients have anxiety disorders.
