Description
This protocol includes the anxiety subscale of the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90). The anxiety subscale of the SCL-90 includes self-administered questions for adults that cover primary symptom dimensions and provide an overview of the respondent’s symptoms and their intensity at a specific point in time. Each item is scored on a scale of 0 to 4 (with 0 = not at all, 1 = a little bit, 2 = moderately, 3 = quite a bit, and 4 = extremely), asking respondents which number best describes how much that problem has bothered them in the last 4 weeks.
Specific Instructions
The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) is a proprietary, fee-based instrument that is available from Pearson Education, Inc.

Selection Rationale
The Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90) was selected to provide a quantitative measure of anxiety symptoms rather than simply categorical diagnoses. SCL-90 was vetted against several other dimensional measures of anxiety disorders and ultimately selected because it is easily administered as a self-reported instrument, takes less than 15 minutes, and captures general symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety Disorders Symptoms

Definition
A questionnaire to assess anxiety disorders, which include a number of different conditions such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (APA, 2000).
Purpose
This measure is used to screen an individual for the presence of anxiety disorders and to assess the severity of underlying symptoms. Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions occurring in about 18 percent of the population (Kessler et al., 2005). Anxiety disorders may be influenced by genetics and environmental factors and commonly occur with other physical conditions, such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal disease, as well as with other mental illnesses such as depression and substance abuse disorders (APA, 2000). Furthermore, a significant proportion of pediatric psychiatric patients have anxiety disorders.
