Protocol - Social Capital

Description

The Position Generator is used to gather information about the occupations of relatives, friends, and acquaintances in the person’s social network. Acquaintances are people who the respondent knows by face and by name. The occupations, whether prestigious or not, make up the respondent’s access to key social resources. The Position Generator used in the 2004 and 2006 U.S. Social Capital Surveys includes questions about 22 jobs and follow-up questions about anyone in the respondent’s network who has that job. The interviewer asks the respondent if he/she knows anyone who has that particular occupation. If the respondent answers "yes," the interviewer asks a follow-up question about the relationship between the respondent and this person, how the respondent got to know the person, how long the relationship has existed, how close the relationship has been, and also about the gender and ethnic/racial background of the person.

Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

Equipment Needs

These questions can be administered in a computerized or noncomputerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. A laptop computer/handheld computer will be needed to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

Definition

This measure identifies a person’s ability to connect to other types of individuals in life and society. Assessing a person’s connectedness to others who hold specific resources (e.g., skills, knowledge, prestige, and authority) is considered a standard way to measure the kind of social capital that individuals can access for routine and unusual circumstances or needs. The Position Generator identifies these social network resources, which are considered social capital.

Purpose

An individual’s social capital has been shown to influence physical and mental health/illness as well as a person’s overall well-being and quality of life. In addition, social capital is thought to have a broad range of effects on individual behavior (e.g., decision making; ability to get help when needed) and circumstances (e.g., socioeconomic status).
