Protocol - Total Pregnancy Weight Gain - Weight Measured During Gestation
Description
There are several research contexts in which this information could be collected, and how the information is collected will vary depending on the context and availability of related information.
Weight gain during pregnancy is commonly monitored as a part of prenatal care. Total weight gain is calculated at the end of pregnancy using a self-reported pre-pregnancy weight and weight measured at the last prenatal visit before delivery (usually within 1 week of delivery). The information to be collected would be (1) weight measured at final prenatal visit (to the nearest 100 g, e.g., 59.1 kg); (2) date of final visit; (3) pre-pregnancy weight; (4) height; (5) gestational age at final visit; and (6) gestational age at delivery. If the opportunity exists to collect the gestational weight prospectively as part of the research protocol, this is preferred because weights taken using a research protocol are better standardized for amount of participant clothing and scales are regularly calibrated. See Measured Weight protocol regarding the measurement of weight, and record weight to the nearest 100 g. Data to be collected are (1) weight during pregnancy; (2) date on which the weight is taken; (3) gestational age when measurement taken; (4) pre-pregnancy weight; (5) height; and (6) gestational age at delivery.

Protocol
Weights Measured during Gestation (Research Protocol)
Gestational ages, date of initial examination, and pre-pregnancy weight and height are abstracted from medical records, as described in the protocol for abstraction from prenatal charts.
Final weight in pregnancy is measured at prenatal or research visits using a research protocol (see Measured Weight).
Personnel and Training Required
For the aspects of the measures requiring chart review, the abstracter should be trained in medical terminology and records review; for measuring weights, the examiner should be trained as for 021501 Measured Weight. If measure is conducted by computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI), interviewer trained in CAPI administration is required; otherwise, no training is required for the paper-and-pencil interviewing (PAPI).
Equipment Needs
Computer (for computer-assisted personal interviewing [CAPI]), paper-and-pencil (for paper-and-pencil interviewing [PAPI]).

Selection Rationale
Weight gain in pregnancy is associated with pregnancy outcomes, and there are recommended ranges of total weight gain depending on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Women whose total gain is outside these recommendations (too low or too high) are at increased risk of delivering a low and high birth weight (i.e., small-for-gestational age [SGA] and large-for-gestational age [LGA] newborns), respectively. Risk for preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and cesarean delivery are influenced by weight gain. Excess maternal weight gain during pregnancy, especially among those women who were normal weight before pregnancy, has also been independently associated with risk of overweight and obesity in the offspring.
