Protocol - Air Contaminants in the Home Environment

Description

The respondent is asked several questions about interior home or apartment improvements, such as professional cleaning, major renovations, new carpeting, and painting in the last year. The date that the renovation occurred is also asked. Short-term exposure questions are also included such as personal activities in and around the home in the last 48 hours.

Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.* The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

* There are multiple modes to administer this question (e.g., paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted interviews).

Equipment Needs

While the source instrument was developed to be administered by computer, the PhenX Working Group acknowledges that these questions can be administered in a noncomputerized format (i.e. paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer or handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

The protocol includes questions to assess exposure to air contaminants in the last year and last 48 hours, focusing on a common indoor air pollution source-home renovations. In addition, a series of questions about daily activities identifies other potential sources of air pollutants.
