Protocol - Tobacco Brand and Variety - Cigars

Add to My Toolkit
Description

Definitions of different types of cigars and three questions asked by an interviewer to determine the cigar brand and type smoked by respondents.

Specific Instructions

The PhenX Working Group acknowledges these questions can be administered in a computerized or non-computerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

The Content Expert Panel suggests investigators consider nicotine as derived from any source, including both natural and synthetic, when administering this protocol.

The Content Expert Panel recommends investigators substitute people-first language (i.e. replace behavior-based labels such as “smoker” with “people who smoke”) as outlined in Hefler, M. et al 2023, which may differ from the original protocol text.

Protocol

Definitions are provided to participants as follows:

Regular cigars are different from little filtered cigars. They can be large cigars or smaller in size such as cigarillos (In Spanish, “medium size cigars” instead of “cigarillos” here). They are usually sold individuals or in packs of 2 or 3. Some common brands are Black and Milds, Swisher Sweets Cigarillos, and Phillies Blunts, but there are others.

Little filtered cigars are different from regular cigars and cigarillos (in Spanish use “medium size cigars” instead of the word “cigarillos” here). They resemble cigarettes in size and often are sold in packs of 20. They are usually brown in color and have a spongy filter like a cigarette. Some common brands are Prime Time, Winchester, and Cheyenne Little Filtered Cigars, but there are others.

IF ASKED, “cigar smoking” ONLY INCLUDES CIGAR TOBACCO. IT DOES NOT INCLUDE SMOKING CIGARS ONLY WITH MARIJUANA (OR “BLUNTS”), HASHISH OR OTHER SUBSTANCES.

1. During the PAST 30 days, what type of CIGAR did you use MOST OFTEN?

Selection Rationale

The Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) was chosen because it is a large survey (each survey wave includes about 240,000 respondents) of the U.S. non-institutionalized civilian population of adults that has been conducted since 1992 in a consistent manner.  This protocol was selected over others because it was clear which type of cigars people used, and it also included language about blunts. Additionally, it was selected due to ease of using the protocol for most researchers.

The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study is a nationally representative, in-person longitudinal cohort study of non-users and users of tobacco products and those at risk for tobacco use across the United States. Respondents 12 years old and up are asked questions on tobacco use, attitudes, and health, and biospecimens (buccal cell, urine, and blood) are collected from adults. The PATH Study was implemented to provide an evidence base for assessing and monitoring the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s regulatory actions in meeting its mandate under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Regulatory domains include product standards, new and modified risk products, health warnings, and health education campaigns.
