Summary of the Verbal Memory Subtests of the Children’s Memory Scale®

The Children’s Memory Scale® verbal working memory subtest includes three tasks: Stories, Word Pairs, and Word Lists. In Stories, two stories are read to the participant. The child is asked to repeat each story immediately after it is told (Immediate), again after a delay of 30 minutes (Delayed), and asked yes/no questions about each (Delayed Recognition). In Word Pairs, the participant is read a list of paired words. In Word Pairs Learning, the child is asked to supply the second word after the first word is repeated. In Word Pairs Immediate, after three repetitions of the Word Pairs, the child is asked to repeat as many word pairs as possible without cues. After a delay of 30 minutes, the child is again given the first of the paired words and asked to supply the other (Word Pairs Delayed). The child is then asked if certain word pairs were part of the original list (Word Pairs Delayed Recognition). In Word Lists, the child is presented a list of words four times and then given a distractor list. The child is then asked to supply the first word list (Word Lists Total) and again after 30 minutes (Word Lists Delayed). The child is then asked if specific words were on the original list (Word List Delayed Recognition).

The Verbal Memory subtest of the Children’s Memory Scale® is a proprietary interviewer-administered test. Each Children’s Memory Scale® subtest is a part of a complete Children’s Memory Scale® assessment and is not sold separately. To administer a subtest requires a licensing agreement from Pearson.
