Description

The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire is a survey for children in grades 3-12 to respond to questions about bullying. It measures exposure to various forms of bullying, and extent to which peers, teachers, and parents respond.

Specific Instructions

When used to evaluated school-based programming, at least 15 students per grade should be given this survey and at least 10 students per ethnicity. This instrument is most commonly used to evaluate the effects of school-based anti-bullying interventions.

The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire is a questionnaire on bullying that can be administered on paper or electronically. This questionnaire is filled out by students in grades 3-12 and scored against a national database.

The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire is a proprietary protocol and must be purchased from the Hazelden Publishing.

Equipment Needs

The PhenX Working Group acknowledges these questions can be administered in a computerized or noncomputerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

Purpose

Bullying can affect a child’s physical and emotional development. Bullying is when someone repeatedly and purposefully says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.
