Protocol - Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms of Parents/Caregivers
Description
The ASR is a self-report questionnaire inquiring about the respondent’s own adaptive functioning, problems, and substance use. The ABCL is a questionnaire where an individual who knows the adult to be evaluated reports on the adult’s adaptive function, problems, and substance use.
Specific Instructions
The ASR should be used when the respondent is reporting on himself/herself. The ABCL should be used when another adult is reporting on the subject being evaluated. These measures may be considered when a broad assessment of a range of indicators of psychological well-being, including DSM-based scales, is desired. Both measures are proprietary. Complete scoring options require purchase of scoring materials.

The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA®) – Adult Self Report (ASR) and Adult Behavior Checklist (ABCL) are forms containing DSM-oriented and other syndrome scales to assess adaptive functioning, personal strengths, empirically based syndromes, substance abuse, internalizing, externalizing, and total problems. The ASR is a self-report instrument. The ABCL is filled out by someone who knows the adult being assessed. Both forms are scored against norms of age and gender and national statistical probability.
The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) – Adult Self Report (ASR) and Adult Behavior Checklist (ABCL) are proprietary protocols, and administration requires a license from ASEBA®.

Selection Rationale
This protocol was chosen because it provides adequate coverage over a range of mental health difficulties/psychopathology domains. This is important given that a number of caregiver mental health problems have been associated with poorer child outcomes, and comorbidity among conditions is common. These measures offer the ability to characterize psychological functioning across many domains, including DSM-relevant scales, via a brief questionnaire format.
