Description
The Brief Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (Brief MAST) is a 10-item instrument to screen for alcoholism. It is used as a quantitative indicator of the respondent’s alcohol-related problems.
Specific Instructions
Although this instrument can be administered via interview, the Substance Abuse and Addiction (SAA) Working Group (WG) recommends that this instrument be self-administered.
The SAA WG acknowledges that the following questions may gather sensitive information relating to the use of substances and/or illegal conduct. If the information is released, it might be damaging to an individual’s employability, lead to social stigmatization, or lead to other consequences.
Most researchers assure confidentiality as part of their informed consent process, as required by their institutional review boards. Further assurance of confidentiality may be obtained by applying to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a Certificate of Confidentiality, which helps researchers protect the privacy of human research participants. The procedures for the Certificate of Confidentiality can be found at the Grants Policy website of the NIH (http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/policy/coc/index.htm).

Scoring Procedure and Interpretation
If an item was answered in the critical direction, add the number of points indicated for that item:
Item # | Critical direction | Points to add |
1 | NO | 2 |
2 | NO | 2 |
3 | YES | 5 |
4 | YES | 2 |
5 | YES | 2 |
6 | YES | 2 |
7 | YES | 2 |
8 | YES | 5 |
9 | YES | 5 |
10 | YES | 2 |
A score of 6 or more indicates a probable diagnosis of alcoholism, except for questions 3, 8, or 9, which are by themselves diagnostic.
Personnel and Training Required
The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

Selection Rationale
The Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) has good test-retest reliability and internal consistency. The MAST has been used widely for many years in a variety of settings with various population groups. The brief MAST is a shorter version of the 24-item MAST protocol that has been shown to yield equivalent results.
