Protocol - Exposures from Hobbies

Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.* The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

* There are multiple modes to administer this question (e.g., paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted interviews).

Equipment Needs

While the source instrument was administered in-person via a paper-and-pencil instrument, the PhenX Working Group acknowledges that these questions can be administered in a computerized format (i.e., computer-assisted personal interview). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer or handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

This protocol was chosen because it includes several common hobbies that may lead to potentially hazardous exposures. It also captures information about length of time spent on the hobby. Note that the hobby-related exposure data from the Long Island Breast Cancer Study has not been published.

Definition

Questions about particular hobbies in which the respondent participated in for 6 months or longer.

Purpose

Many hobbies involve the use of volatile organic compounds such as paints, solvents, gasoline, or glues and adhesives that can cause adverse health effects such as eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches; dizziness; loss of coordination; damage to the liver, kidneys, or nervous system; and even cancer. Other dangerous hobbies include the use of lead (e.g., making stained glass or fishing sinkers). By determining a person’s hobbies, a researcher may identify a potential cause of an exposure or an illness.
